9 Local Golf Secrets in the Desert!

Golf in the Desert… 9 Local Secrets!

La Quinta Country Club

La Quinta Country Club protected by Eisenhower Mountain

There are a thousand  golf stories in the desert, and these are just a few. Golf courses are notorious for being places where things happen — not all involving a wedge or a putter. We pulled these interesting tidbits from the new Top 100 Holes guide. Use them to regale pals on your next golf outing or find more at top100golf.mydesert.com.

O’Donnell Golf Club

I played at O’Donnell when the par 3 fifth hole had a periscope. At one point they even had a television monitor for golfers to make sure the green was clear ahead.

La Quinta Country Club

Dwignt Eisenhower loved the La Quinta Country Club, and christened it when the club opened in 1959! It is also the oldest club to still be in the Bob Hope Classic/Humana Challenge rotation!

Classic Club

The wind can be a major factore here at The Classic Club! As part of the design philosophy on this course, there is not a single palm tree planted anywhere.

PGA West TPC Stadium Course

Hole 16 became famous when Speaker of the House Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill tried and failed to get out of the 19-foot deep bunker on national television in the Bob Hope Classic.

Bermuda Dunes Country Club Classic Course

I watched a rookie John Daly hit the par 5, 18th in 2 shots! Of note: In 1973, Arnold Palmer won the last of his 62 PGA Tour victories with a putt on the  18th green.

The Quarry at La Quinta

Remington bronzes decorate many of the holes, featuring life size horses and swooping eagles. This is currently the only course in the desert listed in Golf Digest’s famed Top 100 Courses in the Country list.

Tradition Golf Club

Arnold Palmer designed this course, and has a home here! This club was built on the grounds of an old La Quinta date ranch named Hacienda del Gato.

Indian Wells Country Club

Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford teed off together at hole no. 10 in the first round of the 1995 Bob Hope Classic.

Desert Falls Country Club

Desert Falls was designed by architect, Ron Frehm, who also designed golf courses for Euro Disney and the Sultan of Brunei.

Do You Remember Your First Tournament?

My First 8-Hole Golf Tournament & Trophy

In the summer of 1974, right before my 10 birthday, I played in my first golf tournament.

My Dad  was teaching a golf class at ENMU and I spent the last year on the driving range with him learning the fundamentals.  He would drop me at the range and head out  with his buddies for a round of golf and gambling.  The games were fierce at our little club in Portales, NM.  Everyday at 1:00 the boys would convene and work out the game for the day.  High stakes for a small town.

Our range was small and really no more than a mowed pasture with discs at the 100 yard, 150 yard, and 200 yard intervals.  There were no “range balls”… you brought your own in your “shag-bag”.  Each shag-bag held around 75 golf balls– usually cast offs from Dad or balls that we had found.  I would begin with a bag full of wedges to a small mound about 65 yards away that we called a “chipping green”.  Then I would work my way through my bag hitting all of the clubs and emptying the shag-bag 4-5-6 times.  After each bag I would walk out and pick the balls.  My Dad told me to hold the shag-bag with the last 3 fingers of my left hand… to strengthen my grip.  As I picked up the balls… I could see the patterns and walk the yardages for each club.  It also gave me time to reflect on what I was doing… and what I needed to improve on.

It would be months before he would ask me to join him on the golf course.  But once I got out there… I was hooked!  I joined a summer recreation class that summer and hit balls everyday.  Finally– they announced a tournament and we were flighted by boys/girls and our age.  When I saw the trophies laid out that morning… I had to win it!kathy schowe golf

My flight consisted of 4 girls, ages 8-11… playing nine holes and walking, carrying our clubs.  I really don’t remember a thing about my game that day.  Only that we started on a par 5, #2… and it was a long walk down the par-5, #1, just to tee off on the first hole.

When we came around from #9 and reached the clubhouse– the other girls were tired and discouraged… and did not want to finish the round by playing #1 and walking all the way back in.  So they refused to play the last hole!  They said that I was too far ahead of them and they were done!

I was exasperated and afraid that my round would not count if I did not complete the entire nine holes!  I thought that we would all be disqualified and that the trophy would go to NO ONE!

The pro told us to go sit in the shade and have a Dr. Pepper… and later I was awarded the TROPHY!  I was thrilled!

I went on to play golf competitively — juniors, high school, college, and eventually professionally.  I have played in many, many golf tournaments since then… but this is my favorite TROPHY.  I still have it.

Arnold Palmer’s Birthday Today!

Monday, September 10th, 2012

Happy Birthday Arnold Palmer!

Happy Birthday Arnold Palmer!  Arnie is 83 years old today!Arnold Palmer

Not only is Arnold Palmer one of the greatest golfers to have ever played the game… he is also a man who changed the sport with his humility, charm, and connection to his fans.

Nicknamed “The King,” he is one of golf’s most popular stars and its most important trailblazer, because he was the first superstar of the sport’s television age, which began in the 1950s. He is part of “The Big Three” in golf, along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, who are widely credited with popularizing and commercialising the sport around the world.

Palmer won seven major championships:

We are very lucky to live near Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant in La Quinta~ he helped choose the menu and hundreds of photos of  Arnie grace the walls there.  He designed the nearby Tradition Golf Club, and he also has a home there.

During our winter season we are lucky enough to see Arnie at his restaurant many times~ having dinner and sharing stories with friends and locals. He is a man of the people and it shows in everything he does.

Happy Birthday Arnie~ from your fans in La Quinta!

La Quinta Historic Hotel and Celebrity Playground

La Quinta 30th Anniversary– La Quinta Historic Hotel and Celebrity Playgroundla quinta resort

When the new “Hotel La Quinta” opened in 1926 it was dubbed as “one of the finest winter resorts in the country.”

It soon became a secluded retreat to the Hollywood elite such as Greta Garbo and Clark Gable. Movie stars would flock to La Quinta to escape the crowds and paparazzi and spend weekends in the sun playing golf and lounging by the pools.  It was their own secret paradise!

Today’s La Quinta Resort & Spa reflects its historic charm with its lush grounds, pools and courts and its cozy casitas.  They have added a spa and many other amenities over the years and now it is a world-class resort destination.

Golfers have their choice of the Dunes and Mountain courses designed by Pete Dye.  They offer challenging tests and spectacular scenery of the adjacent Santa Rosa mountains.

Come visit us in La Quinta and spend a spectacular weekend at the La Quinta Resort & Spa!

Rockwood Grill Open at Marriott in Palm Desert!

The JW Marriott Resort in Palm Desert is a flag-ship hotel for the Marriott chain or hotels and resorts.  When I first moved to the jw marriottdesert in the late 1980′s I would take people there just to see the lobby!  It is truly a spectacular and stunning hotel!  How many hotels have you seen that have boats coming in and out of the lobby to deliver you to different restaurants located on the property?  Live parrots greet you as you come in the doors and real pink flamingos live in the lagoons and lush gardens.
