Free Home Check by Valley Police

Palm Springs Residents Going On Vacation – Police Will Check Home For Free

Palm Springs Property ManagementAs seen in The Desert Sun, police will check your home while you are away. Let your local officer help keep an eye on the house. For years, all nine Coachella Valley cities have offered free home checks to help put snowbirds and vacationing residents’ minds at ease. Even us full-timers planning a summer vacation can benefit from this free service.

“We know that people go away on vacation, and burglaries are an issue anywhere, so if we can help reduce the number of burglaries and help residents feel better, we’re happy to do it,” said Jim Knabb, community resource specialist for the Desert Hot Springs Police Department.

Indian Wells, which has offered the service for 25 years, has the most homes signed up in the valley for its free vacation home checks with an average of 100 homes during the summer, said Indian Wells Police Chief Lt Matthew Jimenez.

The Indian Wells free Vacation Home Checks consist of having the officer inspect the perimeter of the home as well as check to see if doors and windows are locked. And while other city programs do the same, Jimenez said Indian Wells officers go a step further and try to visit each home up to five times a week. Jimenez said he believes that doing these frequent checks is a great preventive measure and, in the event that a crime does happen, helps expedite investigations.

For instance, upon a home check, Jimenez said officers discovered a burglary recently occurred and were quickly able to recover the stolen items. “The city has embraced this program and the citizens really love it,” Jimenez said.

Residents who live in cities that contract for police services with the Riverside County Sheriffs Department – Coachella, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage – all have access to this free service.

Cities that have their own police department – Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Indio and Palm Springs – have similar programs offered throughout the year. Some gated communities also offer their own home checks conducted by security officers upon request.

LIVNG DESERT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! (edit/delete)

LIVING DESERT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

If you love desert plants, animals and spending time talking to others about them, you might fit right in as a volunteer or docent at The Living Desert.

The zoo and botanical gardens, located in Palm Desert and Indian Wells, is looking for adult and teen volunteers and docents for the upcoming 2010/2011 season.

Volunteers positions are long-term and applicants must be able to commit to at least one three- to four-hour shift per week, said Volunteer Coordinator Judi Greene.

Volunteers are needed to lead school tours, act as storytellers and assist guests on their visits to the zoo, said Greene.

General orientation sessions for both volunteers and docents will be take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 6 and Nov. 8. The orientation sessions are a chance to see what volunteer opportunities are available, she said.

For the most part, volunteers do not work with animals, except for those assigned to the petting corral, Greene noted.

For those interested in becoming docents, training runs from Oct. 19 through Feb. 1 for the twice-weekly 8:30 a.m. to noon sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Adult volunteers and docent applicants must be a high school graduate or older, Greene said.

Once accepted into the program, membership in The Living Desert will be required.

The ZooTeens program is also accepting applicants. ZooTeen volunteers must be incoming freshmen or older and be able to commit to 12 hours of volunteer work per month throughout the school year, and for the summer camp programs.

Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially needed for all positions.

Applications are available on the The Living Desert website.

Go to livingdesert.org and the “education” pull down menu. From there, go to the volunteer menu.

For more information call The Living Desert volunteer office at (760) 346-5694 Ext. 2503, jmgreene@livingdesert.org; livingdesert.org.

Pot Dispensary to Open in Palm Springs Tuesday

Friday, May 21st, 2010

marijuanaPalm Springs is the only valley city to pass an ordinance allowing a limited number of medical marijuana facilities. It allows for two dispensaries to operate as collectives or cooperatives. City officials are taking steps to allow a third under the ordinance. The dispensary has 4,000 patients signed up for its services, Hochanadel said.

“I hope 4,000 people don’t show up in one day,” he said, adding that CannaHelp will have 12 staff members on hand for the opening. “It’s going to be a madhouse — you can guarantee it. If there are long lines, people will have to be patient and wait.”

Representatives of Palm Springs’ other city-approved dispensary, Desert Organic Solutions, at 19486 Newhall St. in north Palm Springs, say it aims to open May 29.

In March, at least four unlicensed dispensaries were open in Palm Springs. The city is suing them to close their doors.

Hochanadel’s facility also ran into problems. Police, fire and code officials locked down and red-tagged CannaHelp’s building on March 4 — days before the dispensary originally was to open, after they found health and safety hazards, and hundreds of marijuana plants already growing.

The inspectors encountered what Hochanadel described as an ambitious, nearly 9,000-square-foot indoor growing operation already under way. It involved more than 100 lights, meant to simulate sunlight, about 46 tons of air-conditioning equipment, a system for 3,600 gallons of water per week and electrical changes.

CannaHelp is still working to obtain final approval on the giant on-site cultivation area and estimates it will be ready in about 60 days, Hochanadel said Thursday.
CannaHelp owner Stacy Hochanadel said his dispensary storefront, at 505 Industrial Place, will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday to local medical marijuana patients, after the space received its final city inspection approvals Thursday.

“It was really new to (city officials), too. We had to work side-by-side to figure a lot of this out. They did their best to fast track it,” he said.

In the meantime, CannaHelp will provide medical pot from its supplies stored at a collective in Lake Elsinore ever since CannaHelp’s space was red-tagged, Hochanadel said. It also will draw on covenants with that collective, he said.

Voters will decide in November whether to make California the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Recent polls show voters almost evenly divided on the proposal.

PINK GLOVE DANCE!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

pink gloves

A very creative employee for Medline created, directed and choreographed this in Portland last week for her Medline glove division as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.  This was all her idea to help promote their new pink gloves.  I don’t know how she got so many employees, doctors and patients to participate, but it started to really catch on and they all had a lot of fun doing it.

When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline will be making a huge contribution to the hospital, as well as offering free mammograms for the community.  Please check it out.  It’s an easy and great way to donate to a wonderful cause, and who hasn’t been touched by breast cancer?
