☼ Robert Doisneau’s Palm Springs: 1960 ☼

‘PALM SPRINGS:1960′

Go back to  ‘PALM SPRINGS:1960′

“This was the Palm Springs I had grown up in, where Steve McQueen walked the streets along with tanned locals and sun-hatted tourists, where turquoise swimming pools reflected the sky with an odd romantic poetry.” --Filmaker Cameron Crowe

A previously unpublished collection of Robert Doisneau’s color photography provides a unique opportunity to revisit the early years of one of America’s legendary holiday destinations.  The Collection includes 104 rare color photos taken in 1960.

In 1960, Robert Doisneau was invited by Fortune magazine to cover Palm Springs, the hottest travel destination of the day. Renowned as a playground for the rich and famous, as well as for a silver-haired and well-heeled clientele, it was a world of swimming pools awash with bobbing beehives, martini-fueled parties, and relaxed games of golf, all unfolding against a desert backdrop. There, Doisneau took hundreds of photographs, twenty-three of which were published in the magazine. The rest have been rediscovered in his archives and one hundred are featured here for the first time

Doisneau is best known for his black and white portraits of Parisian street scenes. This rare color collection—which is supplemented with a facsimile reproduction of Doisneau’s original Fortune article—offers a new perspective on his photographic legacy. Accompanying these nostalgic images are extracts from the photographer’s personal correspondence—small masterpieces of derision and self-derision in which he describes being marooned in the “world capital of winter golf”—and an equally amusing introduction written by award-winning French novelist Jean-Paul Dubois.

The following bookstores had ordered “Robert Doisneau: Palm Springs 1960” as of last week:
Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 72-840 Highway 111, Suite 425, Palm Desert.
Latino Books y Mas, 123 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs.

Fire it UP! Roast your Green Chiles at HOME!

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Home Roasting without a Chile Roaster

This is time-consuming and usually produces uneven roasting that makes the chiles harder to peel, but it can be done.  Some people enjoy this process.

Select firm, meaty chiles without wrinkles for
roasting.  Wash them thoroughly.

If you are roasting them in the oven, place them evenly in a single layer on a cookie sheet.  A sheet of foil will help make cleanup easier. Place in the oven about 4-5 inches under the broiler element.

The skin will blister and turn black within minutes, so you need to monitor them closely. Turn the peppers as required to blister all sides evenly. The aroma wafting through the kitchen is a sign they are almost done.

With a good gas grill, you can roast them outdoors.  Place them evenly on the grill close to the flame so you can roast them at a high heat.  Monitor closely and turn to blister evenly on all sides.

When done, the pepper skins should be evenly blistered and mostly black.  Place them on a plate and then empty the plate into a heavy-duty plastic bag.  The chiles should sit in the bag for at least a half hour to let them steam.  This loosens the skin, allowing you to slide them off easily.

Select a convenient bag size suitable to your cooking habits.  Many freeze chiles whole with skins on.  Some believe freezing with skins on improves the flavor.  Some prefer to peel them (the skins just slide off) and some even remove the stem and seeds before freezing.

Remember that thawed roasted chiles do not keep well, less than a week in the refrigerator.  It is wise to smaller bags rather than larger to avoid having your chiles turn into science projects.

The Best Shopping in the Desert!

Not only the best shopping and the most amazing stores… but the best place to people-watch too!

Can you imagine a mile of divine temptations, from dazzling jewelry and exclusive international fashion to fine art, home décor, spas and salons, award-winning restaurants, and a sizzling calendar of events ?

This is El Paseo. This mix of more than 300 shops offers just about everything you could ask for. From Asian imports to luxurious accessories, it’s a one-stop shopping adventure.

More than two dozen restaurants, cafés, and bakeries — many with outdoor patios — make it perfect for lunch, coffee, or a glass of wine between stops. Start your day with a latte, have lunch at a sidewalk café, then shop and return to a chic restaurant for dinner and dessert, or a cocktail served on a mountain-view terrace. This stylish street also serves up public art, colorful flowers, and statuesque palms that sway in the breeze.

Smart El Paseo shoppers stay more than an afternoon or two. From this hub in the heart of Palm Desert, you’re within minutes of live theater, wildlife and nature, elite golf courses and country clubs, luxurious resorts, scenic drives, sophisticated nightlife, and more. In March, the boulevard comes alive with Fashion Week El Paseo, and a food and wine event showcasing the tastiest edibles and drinkables, plus exciting chef demonstrations and tastings.

The Shops on El Paseo
At the west end of the shopping district, celebrated designers, specialty retailers, and fine restaurants make up The Shops on El Paseo. Burberry, Gucci, and Ralph Lauren  represent only a few of the fine retailers on this block. Break up your shopping excursion with lunch or dinner at California Pizza Kitchen or Daily Grill.

The Centre on El Paseo
A fabulous array of shops and businesses in the center of El Paseo buzzing with independent boutiques, many of which have invested more than a quarter of a century in the desert. Among these desert classics are Frasca Jewelers, Mr. Marcus, Storekeeper, Mephisto, Diane’s Beachwear, and Palm Desert Tobacco.

The Gardens on El Paseo
In the midst of this shopper’s paradise, you’ll find The Gardens on El Paseo, a 200,000-square-foot ode to tranquility and fashion. This major shopping Mecca includes fine department stores, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, and designer brands like Coach, Tiffany & Co., and Louis Vuitton. It’s also the perfect spot to tickle your taste buds at some of the city’s most popular restaurants.

El Paseo Village
This fall, you’ll want to be the first to experience the new El Paseo Village, on the south side of El Paseo between San Pablo Avenue and Lupine Lane, adjacent to The Gardens. The luxurious complex features Juicy Couture, Banana Republic, Kate Spade, Bebe, Lucky Brand Jeans, and Janie & Jack. The well-known Mastro’s Steakhouse will also be spicing up the village. We have it on good authority that a nationally acclaimed computer store will be part of the retail mix, but we don’t want to spoil the surprise. We just wanted to give you something to bite on.

El Paseo Collection
Art enthusiasts enjoy the eclectic art galleries that line the street, appealing to many different tastes. More than 20 venues celebrate some of the area’s most venerated talent, as well as Western, modern, abstract, and Renaissance art — from paintings to sculpture. Indulge your creative side while absorbing all the culture that El Paseo offers.
