Spectacular views, ease to all of the shops, restaurants and night clubs of downtown. Free parking!

Why is it called Oktoberfest?

The first edition of the Oktoberfest took place in 1810 to celebrate Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen’s wedding. Celebrations started on 12th October and went on until 17th October with a horse race. In the following years the festival was repeated, prolonged and finally re-scheduled in September. Historically, the last weekend of the Oktoberfest always fell in October and this tradition continues today.

Make a Difference Day:  Warm Up Walk in Old Town
Saturday, October 13th – 7 a.m.

La Quinta WalkThe City of La Quinta has vowed to beat the rest of the Coachella Valley in the race to celebrate “Make a Difference Day” – the nation’s largest single day of volunteering – and the Coachella Valley will join the movement for the first time on Saturday, October 27, 2012.

Get fit, meet your neighbors and help the United Way of the Desert – all by walking in the Palm Springs Tram Road Challenge 6K.  For more information on this event, visit  www.active.com and search “Palm Springs Tram Road Challenge”.

To warm-up for the Palm Springs race, the Desert Sun is leading a series of walks.  The goal in the desert is simple: Get the community active – literally and figuratively – by meeting up every Saturday morning for a walk.

Participate in the warm-up walk in La Quinta on October 13, 2012 starting at 7 a.m. The walk will begin at Embassy Suites Hotel (across the street from Old Town La Quinta) and go up Bear Creek Trail (a paved trail with a slight elevation) to the 2nd rest stop and then return back down the trail and finish in Old Town La Quinta.  Total distance will be approximately 3.25 miles, or just over 5k.  The Desert Sun President & Publisher Mark Winkler and La Quinta City Manager Frank Spevacek will take part in this healthy event.

Largest Pedicure Ever… Marilyn in Palm Springs!

 Marilyn Monroe

Largest pedicure ever... "Forever Marilyn" Palm Springs

Marilyn Monroe is in Palm Springs… in case you didn’t know.  This week she was pampered with the largest pedicure ever!

If you are visiting the Palm Springs area come downtown and see her.  She is waiting for you!

Marilyn Monroe

"Forever Marilyn" in Palm Springs

While in Palm Springs don’t miss the 26 ft. tall sculpture of Marilyn Monroe by American artist and Johnson & Johnson heir Seward Johnson. The sculpture is inspired by the famous photograph by Bernard of Hollywood from the film The Seven Year Itch. She is located at what many call the corner of “Main and Main,” Palm Canyon & Tahquitz Canyon Way in the heart of downtown Palm Springs.

Marilyn Monroe has many legendary ties to Palm Springs. To name a few, she was photographed and “discovered” by Johnny Hyde from the William Morris Agency at Charlie Farrell’s Racquet Club. She was also rumored to have frequented a Movie Colony estate with Joe DiMaggio, currently known as the Sand Acre Estate, and owned a 1950’s bungalow-style house in Las Palmas.

In May of 2012, “Forever Marilyn” made her journey to Palm Springs from Pioneer Court along famed Michigan Ave in Chicago.

“Creativity in the Cove” Exhibit Opens in La Quinta

Creativity in the Cove Exhibit Opens in La Quinta La Quinta Cove

I am very excited about this exhibit– the first artist mentioned, George Rhoads, is a client of mine.  He and his wife Laura bought their La Quinta Cove home from me last year!  They came out in the heat of the summer from New York and we found them the perfect La Quinta home in the cove!

Come down to the La Quinta Museum on Friday from 5:00-7:00 and meet the Cove artists, hobbyists, and craftspeople whose exhibit opens that day.  These will include painters, jewelers, photographers, ceramicists, wood work, quilts, and more!  This exhibit will be open till December 22, but this is your chance to meet the artists on opening night!

Anne Phillips, Manager of the LQ Museum, gives an overview of the “Creativity in the Cove” exhibit that opens on Friday, September 21st.

Best Hot Air Balloon in the Desert

Best Balloon Rides in the Desert

I experienced a balloon flight many years ago on New Years Eve… we floated above the east valley and safely landed for our champagne toast!  Flights are launched in the early morning and at dusk.  One of the most unique experiences in the Palm Springs Area!

Balloons Above is taking you to new highs in the desert! Flying over Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley in a hot air balloon is an experience of a lifetime!

Floating effortlessly in one of our colorful hot air balloons, you will view breathtaking vistas of some of the most picturesque landscapes in California.  World famous Palm Springs golf courses, polo fields and exotic orchards pass by below…your flight direction is determined by the breeze.

Flights are conducted in the fall when the air temperature cools enough to allow the balloons to rise!

Have you ever flown in a hot air balloon?

Pink Martini at the McCallum Theatre!

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

Pink Martini at the McCallum this weekend- Hey Eugene!

I’m so excited to see Pink Martini this weekend at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert!

Pink Martini is one of my favorite bands in the world!  Pink Martini with singer China Forbes…pink martini hey eugene
Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world — crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop — Pink Martini’s diverse repertoire is a blend influenced by Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, Tito Puente and Xavier Cugat, as well as Argentine tango, Brazilian samba, Italian folk, Asian and romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and ’50s.

According to bandleader/pianist Thomas Lauderdale, “If the United Nations had a house band in 1962, Pink Martini would be that band.”

I introduced some of my friends to  Pink Martini’s, “HEY EUGENE” a few years ago… and it’s one of those songs you can play over and over.  It just keeps getting better!

There are just a few tickets left… you can get them here!  McCallum Theatre Pink Martini Tickets
