Dive into the Swimming Pool Culture at Palm Springs Art Museum!

Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography, 1945-1982′

Southern California and the swimming pool just go together.  Flying over the Los Angeles area you can look down and become mesmerized by the turquoise jewels that dot the landscape.  Immerse yourself in the SoCal pool culture at the Palm Springs Art Museum, now … or wait until it heats up here in the desert and you really feel like taking the plunge!


When: Saturday through May 27
Where: Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs
Additional details: A series of free pool films will be shown throughout the exhibition.
Museum hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, Friday-Sunday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday. Closed Monday and major holidays.
Admission: Adults, $12.50; 62 and older, $10.50; students, $5; members, 12 and younger, active military and their families with I.D., free. Free admission 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and second Sunday of the month.

Free pool films

“The Swimmer,” 6 p.m., Feb. 2. 1968. Director: Frank Perry. Burt Lancaster stars as a man who tries to swim his problems away in other people’s pools. Based on a John Cheever short story. Annenberg Theater.

“Swimming Pool,” 6 p.m. March 8. 2003. Director: François Ozon. A twisted psychological thriller with Charlotte Rampling as writer whose summer in the French countryside is not what she was expecting. Annenberg Theater.

Esther Williams double feature: 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. March 11. 11 a.m., “Bathing Beauty,” 1944. Director: George Sydney. Williams as a gym teacher with boyfriend troubles. Lecture Hall. 2 p.m., “Million Dollar Mermaid,” 1952. Director: Mervyn Leroy. Biopic with Williams as Annette Kellerman. Annenberg Theater.

“A Bigger Splash,” 6 p.m. April 12. 1973. Director: Jack Hazan. Documentary about artist David Hockney, with an emphasis on his swimming pool works. Annenberg Theater.

“Men Who Swim,” 6 p.m. May 3. 2010. Director: Dylan Williams. A man approaching 40 joins a men’s synchronized swim team to combat a mid-life crisis. Annenberg Theater.
