Golf in the Desert… 9 Local Secrets!

La Quinta Country Club

La Quinta Country Club protected by Eisenhower Mountain

There are a thousand  golf stories in the desert, and these are just a few. Golf courses are notorious for being places where things happen — not all involving a wedge or a putter. We pulled these interesting tidbits from the new Top 100 Holes guide. Use them to regale pals on your next golf outing or find more at top100golf.mydesert.com.

O’Donnell Golf Club

I played at O’Donnell when the par 3 fifth hole had a periscope. At one point they even had a television monitor for golfers to make sure the green was clear ahead.

La Quinta Country Club

Dwignt Eisenhower loved the La Quinta Country Club, and christened it when the club opened in 1959! It is also the oldest club to still be in the Bob Hope Classic/Humana Challenge rotation!

Classic Club

The wind can be a major factore here at The Classic Club! As part of the design philosophy on this course, there is not a single palm tree planted anywhere.

PGA West TPC Stadium Course

Hole 16 became famous when Speaker of the House Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill tried and failed to get out of the 19-foot deep bunker on national television in the Bob Hope Classic.

Bermuda Dunes Country Club Classic Course

I watched a rookie John Daly hit the par 5, 18th in 2 shots! Of note: In 1973, Arnold Palmer won the last of his 62 PGA Tour victories with a putt on the  18th green.

The Quarry at La Quinta

Remington bronzes decorate many of the holes, featuring life size horses and swooping eagles. This is currently the only course in the desert listed in Golf Digest’s famed Top 100 Courses in the Country list.

Tradition Golf Club

Arnold Palmer designed this course, and has a home here! This club was built on the grounds of an old La Quinta date ranch named Hacienda del Gato.

Indian Wells Country Club

Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford teed off together at hole no. 10 in the first round of the 1995 Bob Hope Classic.

Desert Falls Country Club

Desert Falls was designed by architect, Ron Frehm, who also designed golf courses for Euro Disney and the Sultan of Brunei.

Homeowners who are leaving for an extended vacation or the entire summer need to take steps to protect their home. Desert locals share these 25 steps they take to protect their homes:

Local homeowners differ on whether to turn the air conditioner off or leave it at a high setting, but all agree to make sure it doesn’t run constantly.
Clean food out of refrigerators, freezers and cupboards.
Lock all doors and windows.
Unplug all appliances, TVs, lamps, radios, washers, dryers and small electronics.
Close all blinds and curtains.
Set lights and sprinklers on timers.
Enlist a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on the property or hire a property management company.
If applicable, notify the homeowners association that the home will be vacant and provide them with emergency contact information.
Arrange landscaping and pool care.Use earthquake safety straps and brackets to attach heavy furniture to walls.
To help add moisture to furniture, place buckets of water throughout the home.summer checklist
Close drains.
Turn off inside water valves to the washer, under sinks and at toilets.
Turn the water heater to the “vacation” setting.
Turn off telephone ringers.
Bring in outdoor furniture.
Take out all trash.
Strip beds to allow mattresses to air out.
Vacuum carpets and floors to ensure that no sources of food remain for vermin.
Take all small valuables with you.
Arrange for mail forwarding, and stop the newspaper.
Put candles and clothing items with elastic — bathing suits, undergarments, etc. — in the refrigerator to prevent the heat from destroying them.
Lay lamps on the ground to prevent breakage in the event of an earthquake.
Oil wooden furniture.
Cover furniture with tarps to protect from dust and/or plastic in the event of a roof leak.

Coffee Ice Cream lover? Try this Espresso Chocolate Gelato!

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Espresso Gelato with Dark Chocolate Chunks

Espresso Gelato with Dark Chocolate Chunks

* I made this gelato and tried some before bed… it is delicious… but it did keep me awake!

espresso gelato with dark chocolate chunks!

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup sugar, plus 1/4 cup
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 4 shots espresso
  • 1/2 cup ground espresso beans
  • 2 cups chopped dark chocolate

In a saucepan combine the milk, cream, and 1/3 cup sugar over medium heat. Cook until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl whip the egg yolks with the remaining sugar using an electric mixer until the eggs have become thick and pale yellow, about 4 minutes. This can also be whipped by hand.

Pour 1/2 cup of the warm milk and cream mixture into the egg mixture and stir. Add this mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over very low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture becomes thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon, about 10 minutes.

Place a strainer over a medium bowl and pour the warm custard mixture through the strainer. Stir in the espresso and espresso grounds. Stir in the chopped chocolate. Chill mixture completely before pouring into an ice cream maker and follow manufacturer’s instructions to freeze.

Yields 1 quart

American Dream? Homeowner Satisfaction Survey Results

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Is the American Dream alive and well? Are Homeowners satisfied?

Is the American dream alive and well?  Are Homeowners satisfied?

According to the recently released results of the the 201 National Homeowners Satisfaction Survey from HomeGain– the survey revealed that 72% of surveyed homeowners are satisfied  with owning a house.  26% were dissatisfied… and mostly because of home depreciation.

People from the northeast were the highest at 77%… midwest the lowest at 68% by region.

Surprising to me those who had purchased a short sale were the most satisified of all at 83%… perhaps the  arduous process creates the feeling of “winning”!

The least satisfied homeowners wer the 18-25 age group, coming in at 45%, the only group to have a satisfaction rate less than 50%.  Perhaps these younger homeowners have unrealistic expectations when purchasing their home… also– they have purchased in a down market, and have yet to experience the appreciation in their home that more experienced buyers have encountered.

Snoring Spouse? Sun City has a solution for you!

Homes Designed for our Snoring Husbands… What will they think of next?

Today I learned about a new floor-plan design marketed specifically to couples who are sleep-challenged. Those couples that have a partner who snores, huffs, puffs, grunts, coughs, and keep the other partner awake. This hit very close to home for me… because my husband can be a snorer. And right now in the depths of a chest cold, he is also a cougher, with snoring as a bonus!

I have retreated to the guest room when it becomes more than I can bear… and when I know I have to get up early the next morning. I don’t really want to go all the way down the hall– but it is a better option than the couch, or no sleep!

Now, it turns out, I find that I am far from alone. They are actually designing homes with this in mind! Today’s Desert Sun featured an article about our Sun City community.

Buyers whose marriages are plagued by a spouse who snorts, grunts and wheezes while he or she sleeps can opt for an adaptable bedroom plan marketed as the “owners retreat” at Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio.

Designed for couples who start out in the same bed but end up apart because of ear-piercing snoring, insomnia or late-night TV viewing habits, this secondary bedroom is connected to the bathroom of the master bedroom.

“A nice enclave that shares the master bathroom provides a civilized alternative to the family room sofa,” said Jacque Petroulakis, corporate communications spokeswoman for PulteGroup Inc., the parent company of Del Webb.

Many people “don’t like the idea of having totally separate rooms, but before this, didn’t have any other choice.”About a quarter of couples in the 55-and-older age group sleep apart to get a good night’s rest, according to PulteGroup, which got the data from a third party but also conducted focus groups and interviews as it developed the bedroom plan.

If you are interested in previewing these “sleep friendly” homes… give me a call!

Sweet Dreams!
